Urban Green Lab had a great time on October 5th taking part in NAZA's 6th annual Youth Leadership Retreat at Camp Widjiwagan- and what a special place to inspire our student leaders! Between the sunny fall weather, the scenic views of forest and Percy Priest Lake, and the energetic and attentive students in attendance, the retreat was a well-rounded success. Over 150 students from NAZA sites across the city and their site leaders cycled cycled through a series of lessons and workshops all focused on connecting students with resources, each other, and developing their understanding of a STEM education.
Urban Green Lab was thrilled to "graduate" 6 classes of Garbology 101 experts. Garbology is our crash course in mindful waste management. This interactive game is built to encourage students and adults alike to think twice about what it means to throw something "away". The relay-race style of the game is not only fun and active, but it is a useful tool for triggering more mindfulness when it comes to trash. We were impressed with the level of engagement and loved hashing out common waste conundrums with the kids. At the end of each session, some of the students verbalized their green pledges to reduce waste in their own way.
Thanks to YMCA Camp Widjiwagan, the guidance and compassion of the Nashville After Zone Alliance site leader team, and all the students involved.
We look forward to more successful and fun programming like this in the future!
